How Do Air Suspension Conversion Systems Work?

A major concern of air suspension is the cost for replacements, with so many components that can fail in this system; conversion kits are becoming the most economical way to solve this dilemma. Air spring bags typically last 5-7 years, after this period dry rotting can cause the bags to crack and create leaks causing other components to fail if not replaced on time. Proper maintenance of the gas shocks is also essential to upkeep the vehicles suspension. Changing this gas shocks every 50,000 miles will help with the overall life of the suspension.

WHAT IS A CONVERSION KIT? A conversion kit is a system in which you remove the vehicle's air suspension and replace it with an alternate form of suspension. These conversion kits vary greatly depending on the year, make, and model of the vehicle.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONVERSION KITS

How this conversion kits works: this conversion kit is design to replace the air ride in your vehicle. Taking the place of the 2 air spring bags at the rear will be the coil springs. No longer will the vehicle need an air compressor to keep it at a comfortable ride height. The solenoids will now be an inactive part of the system, although they will still be needed for electronic purposes. The same thing will be true with the height sensors, control module, and the air compressor. As with many vehicles there are gas pressurized shocks, 2 in the front and 2 at the rear, it is recommended that those gas shocks are replaced every 50,000 miles to maintain the suspension.

Converting your vehicle from air suspension to a coil spring kit is an easy process that does not require any modifications to the vehicle. Taking the place of the air spring bags will be the coil springs specifically designed to fit the vehicles suspension. For good ride quality gas shocks should be replace as well. Every vehicle can be different, but most gas shocks last up to 50,000 miles and can affect the suspension. In the front of the vehicle the air shocks will be replaced by coil over shocks. Keep in mind that if you do convert to a coil conversion kit, the old air system will still need to be in place for electronic purposes.

Eliminating the air suspension on your vehicle is an easy procedure that can be preformed within a couple of hours. Deflate the air bags, remove the air strut assembly, and replace it with the coil over strut assembly. The solenoids need to stay connected to the Electrical connector and tied back. Once the conversion kit is installed the vehicle will return to factory height, there will no longer be a need for the air compressor.

If air suspension is becoming a hassle and an expensive problem converting to the coil over conversion will be the solution. Doing away with the electronic self-leveling air system for a coil over conversion is a simple procedure. Coil over shocks bring the vehicle to factory height and is a self standing shock. It does not have to receive a message from the computer or control module. No longer will the air compressor or control module be necessary for the suspension to self adjust. For electronic purposes these components will need to stay on the vehicle even after the conversion is complete.

A passive air shock conversion kit still works with the air compressor to keep the vehicle at factory height. When converting to a passive system you will be eliminating the electronic part of the shock. Rear of the vehicle will still be connected to the air compressor; the compressor will fill the shocks with air as needed. The front of the vehicle will have passive gas shocks taking the place of the self-leveling electronic shocks. The conversion kit will maintain a great ride quality at a fraction of the cost.
